When Life Sucks

When things don’t go according to plan—when we fail, when loss shows up at our door—it’s easy to throw up our hands and say, “Here we go again. Life is just suffering.”

We start to believe we’re trapped in a cycle of disappointment, pain, and plain old-fashioned suck.

But in that mindset, we forget.

We forget the blessings—the good things that have been quietly stitched throughout the story.

We forget the relationships we never saw coming, the memories we didn’t plan for but now wouldn’t trade, the growth that came from the stretch and the break.

Yes, life does suck sometimes.

It takes. It robs us of dreams, plans, and opportunities.

But life also gives.

It surprises us with joy, grants us new beginnings, and takes us places we never imagined we’d go.

There have been so many moments in my life when I’ve looked at a situation and thought, “This just sucks. Why couldn’t it work out the way I hoped? Why can’t this story end the way I wanted it to?”

But then, when I take a step back—when I remember that I am not the author or finisher of my story—I realize something:

If everything had gone according to my plan, some of the most beautiful parts of my life would have never happened.

I have found unimaginable peace in surrendering the responsibility of Author and Finisher to Jesus.

There are chapters of my life I still do not understand—chapters that frustrate me.

But I trust His hand more than anything I could have written for myself.

Relationships would have never begun.

Places would have never been visited.

Lessons that shaped me into who I am today would have gone unlearned.

So when life sucks, pause.

Step back.

Look for the beauty you got to witness—the moment you shared with someone you love, the chapter full of small wins, the things that did work out.

Allow yourself to feel the disappointment.

Grieve what didn’t happen.

But don’t let it define you. Don’t let it become your identity.

You are not your losses.

You are not your wins.

You are not what you missed or what you achieved.

You were created for more than that.

Far more than those elementary titles.

The story isn’t over.

The Author is still good.
